June 21, 2016 Meeting Notes– Capital Area Breastfeeding Coalition

Attending: Claretta, Diane, Elon, Hilary, Rose, Emily, Laura,Tracie,

  1. Introductions–welcome to Elon Geffrard, Ingham County Health Department, Maternal Child Health
  1. Breastfeeding Campaign– going well; positive feedback from clients. A video trailer will be shown at the Celebration theaters and the Regal (Lansing Mall) theaters. Tracie will ask Amanda to send a “blurb” to Diane to post on facebook to let people know about the trailers. Rose brought campaign posters to share. There will be a campaign meeting/event, possibly in August. May be a press conference with community leaders.Tracie is submitting a poster session at the National WIC Association meeting.
  2. Allen Neighborhood Center Kid Fest, July 20, 2 – 7 p.m — Emily will be the coordinator and will contact Denise Paquette at Allen Neighborhood Center. Mallory and Claretta and others who want to help should be in touch with Emily.

 4.Breastfeeding Month— Willow Tree can put together a calendar, as they did last year. Nicole is the contact person to notify of events.

Great Latch-On, at the State Capitol on August 6.

BF Walk at Capitol on August 10, 11:30 – 1, Capitol Lawn

La Leche League Live, Love, Latch event/picnic at Patriarche Park on August14

-Screening of The Milky Way (date, venue to be determined)by Willow Tree). Tracie will contact Nicole re: the screening fee for the film showing. Elon suggested Ericson Kiva as a venue.

Black Breastfeeding Week– August 25-31

 If you know of other events, or are planning an event, please let the coalition know.

 5.Coffective— Is a breastfeeding app for moms and providers. All coalition members and breastfeeding advocates, educators, and providers are encouraged to download the Coffective app on their phones. The more that people use it, the more useful it will become to providers and to moms.

 6.CABC Meeting Invites: Discussed inviting local breastfeeding providers as well as midwives, doulas, ob-gyns, peds, etc., to come to our meetings. Diane will develop a google doc to list names of inviteesand to track contacts made. At July meeting we’ll discuss methods of sending invites by mail, flyer, email, or phone, using personal contact follow-up if possible. Purpose is to let providers know about the coalition, and also find out what they need in order to support our bf community. Suggest having “rolling” invites for meetings over the next year. All CABC members should provide names of providers and contact info.

 7. Updates:

 Black Breastfeeding Sisterhood— starting an evening group on 4th Mondays, 6 – 8 p.m.,held  a barbecue. Future proposal to include a rock n rest and breastfeeding area at Lansing Juneteenth celebration.

 McLaren –MDHHS grant to link families with resources; providing nurse education; continuing concern about providing only Evenflo breastpumps; planning an event in the fall to include Paula Shreck.Stopped providing formula bags in April; now are giving Sleep Sacks, packed in a cooler bag.

 Willow Tree/Climb Out of Darkness– Very good turn out for hike– 55 adults. Willow Tree will receive some grant funds from the Climb out of Darkness group for Flourishing Families.  This provides moms with support.  They are training volunteers, which includes breastfeeding training. The Edinburgh tool is used for screening; Laura knows of another screening tool that may be considered.-

–Ingham County HD— Baby Cafe on Wednesday had 35 moms. The Ingham group has been having 1-3 moms per session.  Ingham is thinking about a different space. Strong Start Healthy Start has 3 Community Health Workers who serve 50 clients each and do home visits. All of the CHWs will be trained to become CLC’s.

–La Leche League— La Leche League of Michigan is hosting two events this October at the Postma Conference Center in Grand Rapids:7th: Healthcare Provider Seminar;8th: Breastfeeding and Parenting Area Conference; Linda Smith to speak about sleep and Lyme disease.
